On this 1st of May, I extend my warmest greetings and profound appreciation to every Nigerian worker as we commemorate International Workers’ Day an occasion that honors the dedication, resilience, and invaluable contributions of our nation’s workforce.


Workers’ Day, also known as Labour Day or May Day, is celebrated globally to recognize the achievements of workers and the labor movement. In Nigeria, it has been observed as a public holiday since 1981, following its initial declaration by the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) government of Kano State in 1980 . 






This day serves as a reminder of the struggles and triumphs of workers who have fought for fair wages, reasonable working hours, and safe working conditions. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of labor movements worldwide, which have been instrumental in advocating for workers’ rights and social justice .


In Nigeria, the labor force is the backbone of our economy, driving progress across various sectors from agriculture and manufacturing to education and healthcare. Their unwavering commitment and hard work have been pivotal in shaping our nation’s development.


As we celebrate today, let us not only acknowledge the achievements of our workers but also reaffirm our commitment to improving their welfare. It is imperative that we continue to strive for policies that ensure equitable treatment, job security, and opportunities for professional growth.


To all Nigerian workers, your perseverance and dedication do not go unnoticed. May this Workers’ Day inspire renewed vigor in our collective pursuit of a more just and prosperous society.
