In a solemn tribute to Nigeria’s late former President Muhammadu Buhari, the National Assembly has suspended all legislative activities until Tuesday, July 22, 2025, to honor his legacy of service and integrity.


The directive, issued by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana Esq., reflects the profound respect lawmakers hold for Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 in a London clinic.


The suspension, announced on Monday, allows lawmakers to participate fully in the burial rites in Daura, Katsina State, where the former president was laid to rest amid military honors and heartfelt farewells from dignitaries, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo.


The National Assembly’s leadership, in a statement, expressed deep sorrow, describing Buhari as a symbol of discipline and commitment to Nigeria’s unity, urging members to reschedule their engagements to pay their respects.


At the National Assembly Service Commission earlier today, the atmosphere was heavy with grief as Hon. Aminu Malle PhD, the commissioner representing the Northeast, penned a poignant condolence message to President Tinubu and the Buhari family.


In his message, Malle described Buhari as a towering figure whose life was a testament to selflessness and patriotism, leaving an indelible mark on Nigeria’s political landscape. “His unwavering dedication to the Nigerian project, from his days as a military leader to his democratic tenure, will forever inspire us,” Malle wrote, his words echoing the sentiments of a nation in mourning.


The commissioner’s tribute highlighted Buhari’s personal honesty and his historic 2015 election victory, which united a fractured opposition and reshaped Nigeria’s political history, a legacy Malle urged Nigerians to cherish.


The suspension of legislative duties has resonated deeply across the country, with lawmakers and citizens alike reflecting on Buhari’s enduring contributions. 


Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele and House spokesman Akin Rotimi, in separate statements, praised Buhari’s discipline and moral leadership, noting his rare distinction as both a military head of state and a two-term civilian president. 


As flags fly at half-mast nationwide, the National Assembly’s gesture underscores the collective loss felt by Nigerians, particularly in Katsina, where Buhari’s humble roots in Daura endeared him to many.


Hon. Malle’s emotional tribute, coupled with the Assembly’s pause, serves as a powerful reminder of Buhari’s lifelong service, leaving a nation united in grief but inspired by his enduring legacy.
