NATIONAL ASSEMBLY SERVICE COMMISSION PLEDGES REFORM IN COURTESY VISIT TO SPEAKER ABBAS

In Abuja, September 2, 2025 – The Executive Chairman of the National Assembly Service Commission, Chief Dr. Saviour Enyiekere, led a delegation of commissioners, including Hon. Aminu Malle representing the Northeast, on a courtesy visit to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, at his Abuja residence.


The visit, marking the first formal engagement between the 6th Commission and the Speaker, underscored the Commission’s commitment to transforming the National Assembly’s workforce into a disciplined and professional entity.




Hon. AMINU Malle Phd, a distinguished representative from Taraba State, introduced himself to the Speaker, highlighting the Northeast’s pride in his appointment to the Commission.


In his remarks, Chief Dr. Enyiekere expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly leadership for entrusting the 6th Commission with the responsibility of overseeing recruitment, promotion, and discipline of National Assembly employees.


Dr. Saviour acknowledged the delay in the visit due to pressing issues that required immediate attention upon assuming office.


Enyiekere emphasized the Commission’s dedication to upholding federal character principles by ensuring balanced representation across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones in appointments.


Enyiekere assured the Speaker that the Commission would adhere strictly to relevant rules and regulations, fostering a workforce characterized by professionalism, fairness, and justice.


The Executive Chairman outlined bold initiatives to address longstanding challenges faced by legislators.


He proposed the establishment of a Council of Former Presiding Officers to leverage their experience and the reintroduction of legislative quarters to provide centralized accommodation for National Assembly members.


Enyiekere noted that many legislators face accommodation challenges in Abuja due to high property costs, often resorting to less secure outskirts. Citing the recent construction of judges’ quarters by the Federal Capital Territory Minister, he urged the Speaker to initiate legislative action to realize these proposals, pledging the Commission’s support in driving the projects.


In response, Hon.Speaker Abbas Tajudeen commended the 6th Commission’s appointment, describing it as a deliberate choice to correct past administrative lapses.


Hon. Tajudeen urged the Commission to prioritize merit-based recruitment and training for clerks, emphasizing that current clerks often lack the capacity to guide their principals effectively. 


Abbas recommended leveraging the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) for comprehensive training programs, including a proposed six-month on-the-job training for existing clerks. 


He also advised the Commission to diplomatically navigate political pressures while ensuring that both legislative and non-legislative appointments reflect competence and fairness.


The visit concluded with mutual affirmations of collaboration.


Chief Dr. Enyiekere praised Speaker Abbas for his exemplary leadership, praying for his continued wisdom and health.


Hon. Malle’s presence reinforced the Northeast’s commitment to supporting the Commission’s reforms. 


The Speaker’s call for the Commission to “write their names in gold” by addressing past wrongs and enhancing professionalism set a clear tone for the 6th Commission’s tenure, signaling a new era of accountability and efficiency in the National Assembly Service Commission.
