OWO COUNCIL CHAIRMAN SUSPENSION, DEMOCRACY IN ACTION?

By Kehinde Bisi-Taiwo

Nigeria's nascent democracy has suffered terribly from the impact of a debilitating incursion of a special class of "poliTRICKcians" either in khaki or in flowing agbada.

‎A statistical analysis of the foremost rulers in the land to date will confirm the veracity of this glaring fact.

‎The effect of what I normally call "jackbootocrazy" in our land had manifested severely at one time or another and it has taken a psychological toll on non-khaki actors at the helm of affairs too.

‎The recent enthronement of Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan opened the debate on some of the regrettable manifestations of the military fiat of those days while revisiting memory lane, particularly under a born-again democrat in the person of Baba Olusegun Obasanjo; his reign witnessed several frivolous impeachments of governors while our democracy was evolving from the "do or die" style.

‎I am of the candid opinion that, lessons have been learnt and the uninterrupted process of our democracy up to date is a confirmation of that.

‎Now coming back home, the recently reported suspension of the Council Chairman in the Owo Local Government Council Secretariat where the legislative branch of the government in their wisdom had chosen to wield a big stick against Hon Tope Omolayo in a near "Fubara treatment"  in the course of exercising a statutory right of checks and balances.

‎The development had come with mixed feelings and instant interrogation from the general public; being the first of its kind to be witnessed in that level of government in the Sunshine State at least in the present dispensation.

‎Be that as it may, only the end of the development will spell out the justification or otherwise of an action that was visibly backed by the majority of the councilors.

‎Good as democracy is painted as one of the best form of rules in human society, it is also fraught with its merits and demerits as a game of numbers, it is hoped that, this auto factory reset activated by the legislative arm of government in Owo Local Government Area Council will send a meaningful signal to the remaining local governments across the state for optimum performance in the collective good of the electorates, moreso, in our near one party state scenario here.

‎That said, all stakeholders should endeavor to get to the root of the situation with a view to making the best out of the brouhaha in the interest of everyone.

‎May our democracy never fail. Amen 🙏
