NASS NUJ CHAPEL CHARGES MEMBERS ON PROFESSIONALISM AND IMAGE PROTECTION

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), National Assembly (NASS) Chapel, held an emergency congress meeting today, Monday, November 3, 2025, in Senate Room 312.

The meeting was Chaired by Comrade Abdulkadir Sarafadeen Msc, the NUJ NASS Chapel CHAIRMAN, the meeting commenced at 11:23 a.m.

The Chairman emphasized the union rapid progress and stressed that the primary purpose of the gathering was to reinforce members' roles as information staff within the National Assembly.

Comrade Sarafadeen sternly reminded members that their core duty is to safeguard the image and integrity of the National Assembly and its legislative activities, stating that they are not conventional journalists but rather information officers tasked with internal communication and image management.

A significant focus of the Chairman's remarks was on maintaining professional conduct and avoiding actions that could tarnish the institution's reputation.

Comrade Sarafadeen specifically referenced a recent incident, the "NASSTV saga," calling for a collective effort to self-correct and prevent future recurrence of such issues.

Comrade Sarafadeen highlighted his success in halting what he described as "wrongdoing and explosion of money and collecting money in the names of practicing journalism" within the press corps.

He warned against "junk journalism" and urged the union's 89 members to be cautious and guided in their communications, stressing the importance of accrediting only the accreditable within the NASS complex.

Furthermore, the meeting addressed preparatory steps for the upcoming Press Week, scheduled for November 17th and 18th, which was noted as another key reason for the emergency congress.

The Chairman praised the Press Week Committee for their hard work, predicting the event would be "amongst one of its kind in the history of the National Assembly."

The issue of identity cards for members was also brought up.

Overall, the congress served as a critical platform for the leadership to rally members around the core values of professionalism, institutional loyalty, and meticulous performance of their duties as the NASS information staff.
