NIGERIA'S AIRLINE INDUSTRY: WHERE PASSENGERS ARE PUNISHED, BUT AIRLINES GET A FREE PASS

In Nigeria, missing a flight can have severe consequences for passengers, including hefty fines and loss of ticket value. However, when airlines delay flights for hours on end, there's often no accountability or compensation for affected passengers. This glaring double standard raises questions about the priorities of Nigeria's airline industry and the regulatory bodies that oversee it.


While passengers are held to strict rules and penalties, airlines seem to operate with impunity, delaying flights without any significant consequences. This lack of accountability not only undermines passenger rights but also erodes trust in the industry as a whole.


It's particularly disheartening to note that despite the presence of a Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, SAN, the industry remains plagued by maladministration and a lack of effective regulation. The absence of a robust framework for enforcing compliance with airline regulations has emboldened airlines to disregard passenger rights and prioritize profits over safety and service.


Under the current administration, the Nigerian aviation sector has failed to demonstrate a commitment to protecting passengers and promoting a culture of accountability within the industry. The lack of effective oversight and enforcement has created an environment where airlines feel free to flout the rules without fear of consequences.


The Consequences:


- Passengers are left stranded, with no compensation or support for delays and cancellations


- Airlines are not held accountable for their actions, leading to a lack of trust and confidence in the industry


- The Nigerian aviation sector is perceived as being more interested in generating revenue than providing safe and reliable services


The Solution:

- The Minister of Aviation must take immediate action to strengthen regulatory frameworks and enforce compliance with airline regulations


- Airlines must be held accountable for their actions, and passengers must receive fair compensation for delays and cancellations


- The aviation sector needs a robust framework for protecting passenger rights and promoting a culture of accountability


We urge the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, SAN, to take immediate action to address these issues and restore the public's trust in the industry.

The current state of affairs is unacceptable, and passengers deserve better.
