Is air travel in Nigeria a luxury reserved for the elite?

The recent hike in airfares is nothing short of extortionate. A Lagos to Owerri flight now costs ₦500,000, and to make matters worse, the return fare to Lagos is a staggering ₦700,000. What justifies this exorbitant pricing for a relatively short distance?


The condition of the aircraft used by these airlines further compounds the issue. Many of these planes are aged between 15 to 20 years old, yet they're charged with exorbitant prices.


This is akin to selling a used car without disclosure of its age and condition, then pricing it like a brand-new model.


We urge the Airlines Association and the Federal Government to intervene urgently and regulate airfares to protect citizens from exploitation.


Air travel should not be a privilege reserved for the elite and politicians. Every Nigerian deserves access to affordable air travel.
