IGP Disu honours 17 officers killed in Yobe terror attack

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, on Tuesday braved heavy rainfall to honour 17 police officers killed by terrorists in active service in Yobe State, vowing that the force will not be deterred in the fight against terrorism, kidnapping, and other forms of criminality.


The 17 officers, all members of the Police Mobile Force, were killed during a terrorist attack on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area, in the early hours of May 8, 2026.


Addressing journalists at the tribute ceremony, the IGP said the fallen officers died while defending Nigeria and protecting citizens from insecurity.


“Today, we gather with heavy hearts but with immense pride to honour 17 gallant officers… who paid the supreme price in service to our dear nation,” he said.


He described their sacrifice as the highest form of patriotism and duty, noting that officers of the Nigeria Police Force continue to operate in the North-East alongside the military and other security agencies under extremely dangerous conditions.

The Nigeria Police Force boss said personnel deployed across the region remain committed to confronting terrorism and violent extremism despite the risks involved.


“Our officers continue to put their lives on the line so that every Nigerian family can sleep at night with a measure of safety and peace,” he said.


He added that behind every fallen officer is a grieving family and a nation indebted to their sacrifice.


“Their sacrifices will never be forgotten, and we solemnly pledge that their deaths will not be in vain,” he said.

The IGP assured families of the slain officers that the police institution stands with them in their moment of grief and will continue to support them.


He reaffirmed the commitment of the police to sustain operations against criminal elements across the country.

Prayers were offered at the ceremony for the repose of the souls of the departed officers.
