The Omoboriowo crisis was a violent political conflict in 1983 in the former Ondo State, triggered by Deputy Governor Akin Omoboriowo's controversial declaration as governor-elect over incumbent Michael Ajasin, leading to widespread riots, deaths, and property destruction.

This event reflected deep ethnic and power-sharing tensions among the state's senatorial districts—North, Central (including Akure), and South—exposing risks of perceived marginalization when power imbalances occur.

Tensions began with governance disputes between Ajasin (from Owo, Ondo North) and Omoboriowo (from ijero, old  Ondo state ), escalating into Omoboriowo's defection to the opposing NPN party and a rigged election announcement on August 16, 1983.  Riots targeted NPN supporters, killing dozens and burning properties, marking some of the worst post-independence violence in Yorubaland.

The crisis highlighted how ambition without equitable power rotation fueled chaos, influencing modern calls for zoning.

Ondo State informally rotates governorship among its three senatorial districts to promote equity, though not strictly enforced.

Recent governors include Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo North, 2017–2023) and Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo South, incumbent since 2023), leaving Ondo Central due after cycles from Mimiko (Central, 2009–2017).

Akure, the state capital in Ondo Central, has never produced a democratically elected governor despite its economic and administrative centrality.
