Dynasty: An Emerging Replica Of Expensive In Akure Politics

He is an oasis in the desert of near-irrelevance that characterises local government administration in Nigeria. This writer is referring to Hon. Ayodeji Emmanuel Ogunoye, fondly called Dynasty, a nickname inherited from his late father.

Ogunoye is the councillor representing Oshodi-Isolo Ward 10 in Akure South local government. He stands out among the young politicians of Akure whose conduct signals a bright future for the politics of the ancient city. His style of politics and his deep affection for Akure offer a glimmer of hope for a better tomorrow.

Now one year into his tenure as the representative of his people, Ogunoye recently presented his scorecard before the leaders of the ward. While seeking election, he had pledged to return for collective assessment of his performance. He has kept that promise.

Has he justified the mandate entrusted to him? The answer is yes. He has demonstrated that even a modest office can be leveraged for social reengineering. Despite the harsh realities confronting councillors in Ondo State, Ogunoye has, in the past year, drawn water from stone. He has achieved this through self-sacrifice, ingenuity and strategic networking.

He understands the price of leadership and pays it willingly. After all, he sought the mandate. True to his campaign promise, he shares his modest salary and allowances with vulnerable members of the ward. Six individuals receive financial support monthly. After six months, another set of beneficiaries takes their turn. It is his way of extending the reach of his goodwill.

Communities across the ward have felt the impact of his generosity and performance. He has donated funds to support community-driven projects. He has facilitated the repair of damaged transformers, secured solar streetlights and supported the grading of roads. A motion he sponsored paved the way for the construction of the bridge linking Oja-Oshodi to Ajaye and adjoining streets. The project is now at an advanced stage of completion.

Market women have also benefited from his interventions. He has provided financial support to enhance their businesses. He has personally visited markets such as Isolo Market and Odokoyi Market. He has plans to reach others. Farmers have received fertilisers through his efforts.

A defining strength of Ogunoye’s approach is collaboration. He recognises the limits of individual capacity. But he understands the power of connection. He knows who to approach and where to seek support to meet the needs and aspirations of his constituents.

Through this strategy, he secured solar lights for some communities from Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire and Prince Abiodun Derin Adesida. Olu Foam is among the beneficiaries. He is also closely monitoring the state government’s plan to construct the Olu Foam road. He maintains a cordial relationship with the Chairman of Akure South local government, Hon. Gbenga Fasua, as well as the state Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ayorinde Abiola Olawoye. 

One of his notable legislative efforts led to the immortalisation of the late illustrious son of Akure, Hon. Temitayo Oluwatuyi, widely known as Tuykana. The late Oluwatuyi had served as Chairman of Akure South local government, State Commissioner, and Secretary to the State Government. Following Ogunoye’s motion, an administrative building was named in his honour.

Those familiar with Ogunoye are not surprised by his performance or his commitment to his people. He is known for dedication to causes he believes in. His generosity and concern for the welfare of others are innate qualities he carries into every sphere of life. From his days in ACN to APC, he deployed personal resources to promote his party as a ward executive member. He remains humble and accessible. He never allows his modest office to cloud his judgment.

To mark his first anniversary as councillor, he has decided to organise an empowerment programme for his constituents. This is nother gesture of appreciation to those who entrusted him with their mandate a year ago.

In December, 2025, the National Association of Akure Students (NAAS) honoured Ogunoye. The association presented him with the award of the Best Councillor of the Year 2025. The honour was in recognition of his community development efforts and exemplary service to the people of Akure.

One cannot help but wonder whether a replica of the late Hon. Adedayo Omolafe, popularly known as Expensive, is emerging in Ogunoye. Omolafe began as a councillor and later rose to become council chairman and a member of the House of Representatives. He loved his people and they loved him in return. Ogunoye appears to be walking a similar path.
