IGR: Ondo govt moves to block revenue leakages
• Engages transport operators, commercial motorcyclists
• Warns against diversion of public funds
The Ondo State Government has stepped up efforts to block revenue leakages and boost its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) by engaging transport operators and community leaders to ensure that funds due to the state are remitted to its treasury.
The Special Adviser to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Special Duties and Strategy, Hon. Olufemi Dennis Fadairo, disclosed this on Wednesday during a visit to Oke-Igbo in Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo Local Government Area of the state as part of his revenue mobilisation tour of the southern senatorial district.
Fadairo explained that the tour, which began in the Central Senatorial District of the state, was aimed at improving the state revenue and particularly at ensuring that funds accruing to the state from commercial activities were properly collected and also remitted.
According to him, the government had engaged traditional rulers, community coordinators and commercial motorcyclists to address revenue collection gaps and ensure that funds generated within their communities were paid into the state’s treasury.
"We have to make our people realise that revenue is important and should be remitted to the state government. We also need to block leakages. We have spoken with the monarch and coordinators here and engaged them that we are partners in progress," Fadairo said.
The governor's aide also disclosed that revenue generated from economic activities across the state was essential to the government’s capacity to provide infrastructure and improve residents’ welfare.
"Oke-Igbo should contribute its quota to the IGR of Ondo State. It is this revenue that the government uses to build infrastructure and make life better for the people," he said.
He added that discussions with commercial motorcyclists in the area had yielded an agreement to commence remittances to the government.
Fadairo said Oke-Igbo must contribute its share to the state's IGR, noting that the funds would support development projects and improve living conditions in the community.
"We have had dialogue with the commercial motorcyclists and reached a meaningful conclusion to begin generating funds into the purse of the state government. We will see the impact of this meeting on our revenue very soon," he said.
Earlier, the Oluoke of Oke-Igbo Kingdom, Oba Akintoye Felix, commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for appointing Hon. Fadairo to address revenue collection challenges in the area.
The monarch said the revenue accruing to the state from public transportation in the community had previously been negligible, describing the situation as a concern to the government.
He said community leaders and relevant stakeholders had agreed to work with the special adviser’s office to ensure that appropriate revenues from commercial motorcycles and other sources were remitted to the state.
"The IGR being realised from public transportation was zero, and this is a great concern to the current government. We have met and discussed with stakeholders, and we have now agreed as a community to partner with the special adviser to ensure that proper and appropriate revenue gets to the government purse," he said.
Oba Felix described Oke-Igbo as a responsible community committed to supporting the state government’s OUR EASE Agenda.
He urged residents and transport operators to ensure that public funds were not diverted for personal use, stressing that improved revenue generation was necessary for the state’s development.
"Nobody should pocket government money. We should contribute to the government’s purse so that it can do something good for the community. Whatever is due to the state government should be remitted to the state government’s purse," the monarch said.
