Politics and politicians are intertwined in a complex dance of power, influence, and public service. Politicians, as elected representatives, are entrusted with the responsibility of shaping policies, making decisions, and serving the interests of their constituents. However, the relationship between politicians and politics can be fraught with challenges. Politicians often face scrutiny over their actions, decisions, and motivations, with some criticized for prioritizing personal gain, party loyalty, or special interests over the greater good. 


With this understanding, effective politicians must navigate the intricacies of politics, balancing competing demands, building coalitions, and making tough decisions that impact the lives of citizens. When done well, politics can be a powerful force for positive change, driving progress, and improving the human condition. Ultimately, the quality of politics and politicians depends on the character, integrity, and commitment of those in power. Citizens also play a crucial role in shaping the political landscape by holding elected officials accountable and demanding better governance.


Regrettably, the relationship between Nigerian politicians and the citizens they serve has been marred by repeated betrayals of trust. Broken promises, corruption, and self-serving actions have led to widespread disillusionment. Some key factors contributing to this betrayal include:


* Corruption: Misuse public funds and resources for personal gain.

* Electoral promises vs. performance: Failure to deliver on campaign promises.

* Lack of accountability: Inadequate oversight and punishment for wrongdoing.

* Nepotism and cronyism: Favoring family, friends, or party loyalists over merit.


This has led to serious consequences such as: disillusionment with democracy, eroding public trust, economic stagnation, and social unrest. When elected officials prioritize personal gain, special interests, or partisan politics over the public good, they prostitute the mandate entrusted to them. This betrayal of trust undermines democratic institutions, erodes public faith in leadership, and can have far-reaching consequences such as loss of public trust, institutional instability, economic stagnation, and 

social unrest. 


Some manifestations of prostituting the mandate include:


* Partisan politics: Prioritizing party interests over public needs.

* Policy manipulation: Shaping policies to benefit select groups rather than the broader population.


To prevent this betrayal, citizens must hold leaders accountable, demand transparency, and engage in the democratic process. Nigerians must demand:


* Transparency and accountability

* Leadership by example

* Institutional reforms

* Citizen engagement and participation


Without effective politicians who have the ability and intelligence to navigate the intricacies of politics, balance competing demands, build meaningful coalitions, and make tough decisions that impact the lives of citizens, the political space will be populated and continue to recycle political prostitutes and destitutes with little or no principles and values.
